THE
PROJECT
BERN
Bern is a political municipality in Switzerland and, as a federal city, its de facto capital. Bern is the capital of the canton of the same name and lies in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district of this canton. The city is not only the seat of the municipal and cantonal, but as a federal city also of the federal administration and thus the largest administrative centre in Switzerland.
The city of Bern has a total population of 143,278 (as of 31 December 2019). After Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne, and ahead of Winterthur, it is one of the most populous municipalities with over 100,000 inhabitants in Switzerland.
For years, Bern has been listed with Zurich and Geneva as one of the cities with the highest cost of living in the world.
The Swiss capital is also a city of culture: whether theaters, museums, concerts, markets or exhibitions, culture enthusiasts will find a rich cultural offering in and around Bern.
Bundesplatz and Bärenplatz (Federal Square and Bear Square)
The smell of fresh bread, cheese stalls of all kinds, good meat, colourful cut flowers, seedlings and fruit and vegetables from the organic farm can already be smelled in the early morning on the "Bundesplatz" and the "Bear Square".
An old Volkswagen Beetle also known as "the Bug" int the English-speaking world. This car was produced from 1938 to late 2003.
The Aare is the longest river running entirely within Switzerland. Its total length is 288 km, the gradient 1665 m, its catchment area 17,709 km² and the mean discharge 525 m³/s (Untersiggenthal gauge, 2019).
The Bern Zoo is the public zoo of the city of Bern. It consists of the zoo called Dählhölzli and the Bear Park, which is spatially separated from the rest of the zoo. The motto of the zoo is "More space for fewer animals". The Bern Zoo is an organisational unit of the City of Bern with special accounts and responsibilities that deviate from the municipal regulations.
